Though she was was only up on her leg minimally, her leg took longer to heal than most. The doctor assured him that it was perfectly normal in Gwen's case, and he tried to take comfort in the fact that walking only presented a slight twinge of pain for her, and that the bones in her leg were straight and sound again.

After twelve weeks, the bandages came off, and she was allowed to be out of the wheelchair full time to build up the strength in her legs again. She thumped around his house with her cane, often letting him escort her on walks around the grounds and gardens.

Winter frost and snow still blanketed the ground yet, but in another four to six weeks, the early buds of spring would started shooting up through the layers of snow, and before they knew it, spring would be in full bloom.

It was a shame they would be in London during the spring. Spring and fall were his favorite seasons here at Bainbrook Hall.

He held her hand in the crook of his arm as they made their way across the cleared walkways. "You've been very quiet lately," she finally said, looking up at him with a searching look. "Have I done something wrong?"

"Why do you automatically assume 'tis you, Gwen?"

"If it isn't me, then what is it?" She stopped on the path, and wouldn't budge as she focused all of her attention on him, searching out his mysteries and apparently his secrets.

He sighed. He always walked a fine line between what he could allow himself to say with her, and what he couldn't. He chose something innocuous and frivolous to make her laugh. His standard modus operandi when she tried to discern his secrets.

"You've nicked my trousers again," he deadpanned.

She laughed as she looked down at the trousers that had been tailored to fit her small frame. "I suppose I have," she said thoughtfully. "Why is it that well worn clothes always feel better to me than brand new?"

"I have no idea. But at this rate, I'll be wearing naught but my smile as I escort you about in London."

She laughed, and smacked his arm lightly. "Surely it isn't that bad!" she chuckled. "Should we call the tailor for you, Your Grace?" She batted her eyelashes at him, and they managed to stick together again. She cursed under her breath and smoothed a finger over them to unglue them from each other.

Unfortunately, he thought the fact that her eyelashes always stuck together when she was trying to bat them at him charming. What he wouldn't give for a truly bad flaw in her character! Anything! He was completely desperate now! He focused his thoughts inward, trying to unravel how to ask her for her worst character flaws without sounding like the curmudgeon he was.

"Gwen?" He paused. Finding nothing that wouldn't outright tell her what he was about, he just waded right into the thick of it. "Tell me your worst flaws. The things that only someone who's lived with you for fifty years would know of.
